Great Blue Heron

Herons are a common bird in California waterways and marshes.  They often hunt beside the road, as do egrets.  
This heron was standing in the grass at a regional wildlife refuge.  I had to work the image a bit to emphasize the breeding plumage.
​In non-breeding times the heron pictured here would not have the feathering on its neck.
